Friday Devotional
  • President Matthew S. Holland
    • new president of UVU
    • elder Holland's son
    • two events have come to mind from praying for the school
      • Christ healing
        • restored withered hand
        • man at the water at Bethesda
        • both done on the Sabbath
        • both cases the Savior tells them to rise
          • suggests multiple methods of meaning
          • awake from physical sleep and do so early in the morning
          • early to bed early to rise is really important
            • even if you are the kind of person who thinks 10 am is dawn and you need your coffee to stay awake or you are the kind of person who's alarm goes off at 7:30 and you hit snooze for just a few more minutes
          • even tho "important things" happen at night, the most important things can happen in the calm of the morning
          • also means awake from spiritual sleep
          • we can wake up early and still not be spiritually awake
          • don't be in the deep sleep of Laman and Lemuel
          • don't just go through the motions: spiritual sleepwalking
          • rise up from laziness and fear
          • rise up over anxiety and rejections
          • Jonah shows us that we aren't alone in our fear to arise, but he shows us that you need to rise up and meet the moment
          • rise over mistakes and moments of failure
          • arise up and be more careful
          • from ancient to modern saints need to arise and shine forth--be a standard to the nations
          • people will flourish in every way if we arise
          • be like the sun...arise
            • leads us to the rising Son
            • ensures that everyone will rise again after death into perfection
            • 9/11..we know they will all rise again (8 years ago today) they will once again have the joy of a physical body
            • even the wicked will become perfect
            • physically...life is way not fair...no one really knows why we have these imperfections, but we will be perfect one day
            • he makes our daily spiritual rising possible
            • w/o Christ's resurrection we have no goal, no reason to live
            • because he lived, died, and rose we have a reason, we don't need any other reason
            • trust in God...he raises the dead
              • he can help will any and all problems and he can fix our sins
    • what will you see when watching your life?
  • to rise is more than to stand up
  • be an active participant of the resurrection
  • not just rising and perfecting of body, but of spirit as well
  • time to act for yourself...will you rise up?
  • God is call in on you now to rise up and let go of the things that can prevent you from reaching your true potential
  • it could be waking up earlier, getting rid of self doubt, getting rid of bad habits, stop dressing immodestly or sloppily, going to institute, devos, and church, magnifying your church calling, and for all of us, rise up and be the best student you can
  • saints are under obligation to study and learn anything and everything they can...what better place than at a university?
  • have a good time at college
  • date, laugh and play
  • but be here for a better reason..to rise up...this is the time to train ourselves to be more like God
  • God knows everything about biology, chemistry...and music and art :)
  • if a person gains more knowledge in this life than another he will have the advantage over his neighbor
  • you can slack off in school and party and just get a degree, but an underachieving approach will not give you the advantage...even if you have the same degree
  • arise in all aspects of your life
  • the Lord has a great work for each of us to do...we have to be humble, faithful and diligent in everything and the Lord will let us know our purpose
  • make a decision to aim higher and work harder...once you commit yourself the world is on your side just that much more
  • rise up and expect miracles to help you along the way
  • if it doesn't seem different..don't give up...things take time!!!
  • have patience and prolonged dedication
  • don't expect shortcuts or the road to be easy
  • when progress seems impossible
    • think of two stories
    • first one, rise first, then he'll heal...we need to act to be blessed
    • when we can't and we personally can not do it...remember God's grace is sufficient...he will bless and he will come
  • don't let the adversary discourage you!
  • man who didn't see God on the other side
    • there are miracles...he had angels...he may have missed Christ in the throng of people who took care of him and loved him...all around him people rose up and cared for him by spiritual direction of Christ
  • I know that my redeemer lives...so cool, UVU's president knows and loves Christ and is not afraid to say it!!! yay! This will be a good school year!!!!
